The Lumwana Mining Company is a large copper mine owned by Barrick Gold Corporation. The Lumwana Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) group launched the CanEducate program in Zambia in 2013 supporting 60 students across 6 schools in North Western Province of Zambia in which the Lumwana mine is located. Beginning in 2015, the program was refocused to support students at the one school in closest proximity to the mine – Mutanda Secondary School in the Kalumbila District of North Western Province. The school’s location makes it the school of first choice for many low-income families around the Lumwana area. The school is run by the Evangelical Church in Zambia for students from grades 10 through 12. Although the school does receive some government funding, the tuition costs are still more than many deserving families can afford. To enable students with demonstrated academic achievement to attend secondary school, the Lumwana CSR team works with the neighbouring chiefdoms of Mumena, Matebo, and Mukumbi to identify the vulnerable families, with the goal of sponsoring 65 students every year in grades 10 through 12. With the targeted ratio of 50:50 girls to boys, the 2017 program is sponsoring 51% girls. The Lumwana CanEducate Program is proud to be associated with helping these children from vulnerable families realise their dreams through further education.
